As we enter another winter season, many of us will grab items that keep us comfy and warm in our homes, like blankets, space heaters, and candles. This month we are focusing on candle safety. Over the holidays, lots of people give and receive candles as gifts. Candles add ambiance and coziness to rooms, they smell great and are nice to look at, but often people forget to blow them out and leave them burning. Burning candles pose a real threat to house fires.
Here are a few important candle safety tips to consider the next time you light a candle:
Don't leave a burning candle unattended by pets or young children.
Be sure to trim the wick down after each use–when you have a wick higher than the candle wax; the flame will heat the glass jar, which can explode.
Don't burn a candle if only a quarter of the wax remains; the heat generated from that small amount of wax can burn the surface on which the candle and its jar are resting.
